Commonwealth
Edison Co. received state approval Thursday to force 18,000 of its
mid-sized business customers to shop for power suppliers over the
next few years as part of a state effort to lure more competition
to Illinois.
The Illinois
Commerce Commission approved ComEd's request that the commercial
customers be required to shop for electricity among 19 power suppliers.
The Chicago-based utility filed its request last month.

utility Commonwealth Edison Co. hopes to raise $361 million more
a year through significant rate increases to homes and businesses.
The proposed
increase, which requires approval by regulators and has drawn skepticism
from a consumer group, presages clashes in other parts of the country
as utilities face higher costs for key materials and as consumers
react to higher power bills.
